A 20-year-old man was killed in the East Village on Friday morning when he was crushed by the construction vehicle he was directing, according to police.
Surveillance video from a store on the corner of East Seventh Street and First Avenue shows that the man was trying to guide the construction boom down East Seventh Street around 8:30 a.m. when he somehow became caught under one of its wheels.
Witnesses said the boom was being used to fix the facade on a nearby building, and that the victim was directing it onto a nearby flatbed truck.
Police say he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The busy intersection was taped off for hours, and passersby stopped to watch as city medical examiners investigated. The man’s body was covered by a sheet and eventually loaded into a waiting van.
The boom’s 42-year-old operator remained at the scene, and police made no arrests.
