A 17-year-old youth was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a Bronx teen as he was leaving school last week, according to police.

NYPD officials said the department’s violent felony squad picked up Tyrell Williams in the Bronx at around noon, five days after Laquai Dash, also 17, was gunned down barely a block from Legacy College Prep Charter High School in Melrose, where he was a student.

Police said the teens had gotten into a dispute when Williams allegedly pulled out a gun and began firing at Dash.

Police were not sure whether Williams and Dash attended the same school. Dashโ€™s grandmother told Gothamist on Friday that she believed they went to different schools.

โ€œHe was a very respectable child. I had no problems with him,โ€ said Vivian Coward, who added that her grandson was on track to graduate high school and start at SUNY Buffalo in the fall.

Dashโ€™s 12-year-old sister Nia Sky Dash told Gothamist on Friday, with permission from her grandmother, that it would be hard to imagine life without her older brother.

โ€œWe would just watch documentaries together and movies, and we would just talk about life and stuff like that,โ€ she said. โ€œHe was just trustworthy and just a really overall kind person.โ€

Williamsโ€™ arraignment was pending in Bronx Criminal Court on Wednesday. Information for his attorney was not immediately available.

According to data from the NYPD, Dash was the first person to be fatally shot in the 40th Precinct so far this year, which covers the South Bronx neighborhoods of Port Morris, Mott Haven and Melrose.
