The exodus from the NYPD’s counterterrorism and intelligence units continues.
Just four months after John Miller stepped down from his role as the deputy commissioner for the department’s Intelligence and Counterterrorism Unit to join CNN as a law enforcement analyst, his replacement is leaving, too.
Chief Thomas Galati, a 39-year veteran of the department, will retire at the end of April after a brief stint at the helm of the intelligence and counterterrorism unit for a job as head of security for NBC on the East Coast, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell announced Monday.
For now, the unit will be led by two commanders, Chief Judith Harrison, who will head the counterterrorism unit, and Chief John Hart, who takes over the intelligence division.
Departing Chief Galati filled a number of roles in the department, from his start as a patrol officer in the 115th Precinct to commander of the 46th and 47th precincts in the Bronx and eventually helming the Bronx Street Crime Unit and the Detective Bureau Gang Division.
“I am proud to know that as I exit this department after nearly four decades, its world-class intelligence and counterterrorism infrastructure is poised for even greater successes under Commissioner Sewell’s leadership,” Galati said.
The NYPD announced another top departure in Chief Isa M. Abbassi, the chief of strategic initiatives, who will head across the Hudson to lead the troubled Paterson, N.J., police department.
New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin announced on Monday that his office would take over the police department with Abbassi at the helm after two officers shot Najee Seabrooks, 31, a suicidal man armed with a knife, during an hourlong standoff.
“There is a crisis of confidence in law enforcement in the City of Paterson,” Platkin said.
