NYPD: For-hire driver charged with manslaughter after passenger’s death

The for-hire driver accused of beating one passenger to death — and leaving a second passenger unconscious — in an alleged fare dispute, was arrested on Friday after initially fleeing the scene, according to the NYPD.

Sergio Zamora Mendoza, 33, was charged with manslaughter and assault over the death of Carlos Guaman, a 66-year-old Brooklyn resident who died in the early hours of Thursday after he and his cousin were repeatedly punched in the head, police said.

Guaman was found unconscious with his fellow passenger around 4:30 a.m. Thursday. Police said the dispute started over the fare, and the taxi was not an Uber, Lyft or yellow cab.

Zamora Mendoza, who allegedly drove off after the beatings, was arrested shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday.

Attorney information for Zamora Mendoza was not immediately available.
