Police detained a 20-year-old driver Sunday night after she allegedly crashed into a pedestrian and cyclist at a Brooklyn intersection.
Officials said the woman was driving a black BMW west on Halsey Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant when, just before midnight, she hit a 19-year-old female pedestrian and a 32-year-old male cyclist at the intersection of Tompkins Avenue.
According to the NYPD, the pedestrian suffered head trauma and was taken to Kings County Hospital Center in critical but stable condition, while the cyclist had shoulder injuries and was taken to the same hospital in stable condition. Police have not released their names.
The driver stayed at the scene and was taken into custody. Police said she has not yet been charged with a crime, and the investigation is ongoing. Her name has also not yet been released.
Sunday night’s incident happened less than half a mile from where 79-year-old Brooklyn resident Yvonne Sandiford was struck and killed Thursday evening while walking across New York Avenue at Herkimer Street. Police said they were investigating Sandiford’s death as a double hit-and-run where two separate drivers who had not been caught hit her and fled the scene. In the wake of her death, local elected officials and activists again called on the city to make street safety upgrades in the area.
Motorcyclist dies after Howard Beach collision
Around 1:30 a.m. Monday, just hours after the cyclist and pedestrian were hit in Bed-Stuy, a 29-year-old man died in Howard Beach, Queens, after crashing his motorcycle into a turning SUV, according to police.
The 24-year-old SUV driver was making a left onto 165th Street from Cross Bay Boulevard when the motorcycle, traveling in the opposite direction, hit his passenger side, police said.
The driver stayed on the scene, and police said no criminality was expected.
The motorcyclist was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released as officials work to notify his family.
