Police shot and killed a 20-year-old man after officers saw him chasing two others with a gun in Brooklyn on Monday evening, the NYPD said.
The shooting happened at the corner of E. 57th Street and Remsen Avenue near Brownsville shortly after 6 p.m., according to the department. Spokesperson Carlos Nieves said officers responded to an alert from the gunfire locator service ShotSpotter โ one block south of where authorities said the shooting occurred.
After canvassing the area for about seven minutes, four uniformed officers in an unmarked car spotted the man with a gun chasing a man and a woman, firing numerous rounds in their direction, NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said. Officers and the man began exchanging gunfire, police said, before officers shot the man several times. He was later pronounced dead at Kings County hospital.
Police displayed a photo of a firearm recovered from the scene.
โOnce again, tonight, you see New York City police officers running towards danger, running in the middle of gunfire, stopping the threat and saving two people’s lives tonight,โ Chell said at a media conference on Monday night.
A 60-year-old bystander was also shot and taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition, police said. The source of the gunshots that struck him was not immediately known, the NYPD said.
Neither of the people being chased were injured, Chell said. Nieves also said none of the officers were injured, though Chell said they were taken to a nearby hospital for observation.
