Overall crime in the city continued to trend downward last month, compared to the same time last year, despite spikes in some individual categories, according to police data.

Police said the decrease was partly driven by an 8.1% decline in shootings, with police counting 79 shootings last month compared to 86 shootings in October 2022. Year-to-date, the dip is more dramatic, with 839 shootings so far this year compared to 1,129 in the same time period last year โ€“ a 25.7% decrease.

Reported rape incidents were also down 19.3% in October compared to the same month last year, from 150 incidents to 121. Burglary incidents were also down 22%, with police counting 1,498 incidents last month, compared to 1,124 for the same time period last year.

Mayor Eric Adams partly attributed the decreases to the NYPDโ€™s efforts in seizing illegal weapons.

โ€œWe’re seeing officers taking illegal guns off the street and itโ€™s showing the results of all of our approaches to deal with violent acts,โ€ Adams said on Wednesday. โ€œI stated when I ran for office and just about every time I’m in front of a microphone, that the prerequisite to prosperity is public safety and we’re looking forward to continue to drive down crime in a real way.โ€

Overall crime declined by 3% in October 2023 compared to the same period last year, though several categories were up, according to police.

The sharpest increase was in hate crime incidents, which were up 124% (101 versus 45) in October compared to the same month last year, partly driven by hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers, which were up 214% (69 versus 22), according to the data. Year-to-date however, hate crime incidents are down 9% compared to last year, NYPD data showed.

The NYPD had initially flagged the increase in hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers in the weeks following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

Crimes in the transit system also increased 5.7% (223 versus 211) during October 2023 compared to the same period last year โ€”…
