The man suspected of pushing a woman into a moving train and critically injuring her in Manhattan on Wednesday was arrested in Newark, police said Thursday.

The NYPD previously identified the man as 39-year-old Sabir Jones. Newark Police detained him at the intersection of Raymond Boulevard and McCarter Highway near a PATH train station at around 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragรฉ.

Jones was transferred to the U.S. Marshals Service, according to Fragรฉ. No further information on his whereabouts or charges was available as of Thursday afternoon.

At a press conference on Wednesday, NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper said Jones was โ€œknown to the departmentโ€ and had been identified through video surveillance within hours of the incident.

โ€œThis was a horrific crime, but Iโ€™m gratified that again the always exceptional NYPD police work led to a quick arrest,” MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said in a statement.

Police were seeking Jones after he allegedly fled the subway station on 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue, where officials said he pushed the 30-year-old woman standing on the southbound E and F platform into an E train that was leaving the station. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition, police said. Authorities believe the incident was an unprovoked attack.

The New York Times reportedly interviewed a man who claimed to have also been punched by the suspect, breaking his jaw. The man told the Times he was awaiting surgery when he saw a photo of Jones and recognized him.

According to the latest MTA crime report from August, major felonies in the subway system were down 4.8% this year compared to last year, while arrests in the system are up 83%.
