Traffic crashes, and when blame causes the "prevention of prevention"

All this week WNYC’s Morning Edition is taking a deep look into Vision Zero, New York City’s street safety policy, launched ten years ago.

When some is harmed by traffic, whether a pedestrian, biker or another person in a vehicle, there’s a tendency to look for fault. Was the driver texting? Were they speeding? Was the pedestrian in a crosswalk? Who had the light?

Jessie Singer is the author of “There Are No Accidents: The Deadly Rise of Injury and Disasterโ€”Who Profits and Who Pays the Price” They are also a strategist and writer with the street safety advocacy group Transportation Alternatives. They joined WNYC”s Morning Edition host Michael Hill to talkย about why those may not actually be the most important questions.ย
