Light rain and warm temperatures arrived in the New York City region overnight Saturday, kicking off an unusually warm weekend for early March with the highs only expected to rise, according to the National Weather Service.
The agency has predicted up to three-quarters of an inch of rain for the region, with the highest chances of rainfall between late morning Saturday through the late afternoon. The rains were expected to taper off throughout the evening before going dry after midnight Sunday.
High temperatures were expected to reach the low 50s Saturday and rise to the upper 50s and low 60s on Sunday โย making this weekend an unseasonably warm one for this time of year, according to James Tomasini, a meteorologist with the NWS.
โAround New York City for this time of year, normal high temperatures are in the mid 40s,โ Tomasini said on Saturday. โSo today we’re looking five degrees above normal, but then tomorrow it looks like about 10 to 15 degrees above normal.โ
Temperatures in Central Park were expected to reach 60 degrees on Sunday, just shy of the NWSโ recorded high for the site on March 3, Tomasini said.
โWe will dry out tomorrow but we are expecting some clouds to stick around,โ Tomasini said. โSo we’re looking at a mostly to partly cloudy day.โ
