EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The Anaheim Ducks have claimed New York Islanders forward Ross Johnston off waivers, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.
In an effort to clear cap space before the start of the regular season — the Islanders were approximately $500,000 over the cap heading into the final week of the preseason — Johnston was placed on waivers where he was initially expected to clear and be placed on their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport.
The 29-year-old left-winger has three years left on his contract which carries an average annual value of $1.1 million. Getting Johnston off the books now has the Islanders at just under $1.4 million under the cap, per CapFriendly.
Mainly as an enforcer, Johnston appeared in 134 games over the past seven seasons, recording nine goals, 15 assists, and 283 penalty minutes.
