New York Islanders veteran defenseman Scott Mayfield underwent successful, season-ending surgery this week to rectify a lower-body injury, the team announced on Tuesday.

He is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for a summer training regiment.

The 31-year-old, who is in the first season of a seven-year deal signed last summer, had been dealing with a nagging ankle injury that ultimately sidelined him in late February. He was limited in the Islanders’ Feb. 22 loss to the St. Louis Blues before hitting the shelf and was placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) on March 5.

He was initially forecasted to be evaluated in four to six weeks from the LTIR designation, according to Lou Lamoriello.

“We’re going to shut it down until he gets completely healthy,” Lamoriello said at the time. “He got banged up a little bit. I don’t really remember exactly what game it was, but he’s been on and off with it and it’s come to the point where we have to shut it down.”

In his absence, the Islanders had been largely rolling with Sebastian Aho on their third defensive pairing alongside Mike Reilly. But he has sat the previous two games for Robert Bortuzzo — the veteran blueliner making his way back from an LTIR stint that began shortly after he was acquired from the St. Louis Blues.

Across 41 games this season, Mayfield recorded five assists and a minus-7 rating. With 11 games to go in the regular season, New York is four points out of a playoff spot.
