Sean Casey will not return as the New York Yankees’ hitting coach for the 2024 season, he announced on his podcast, “The Mayor’s Office,” on Wednesday.
The 49-year-old former big-leaguer cited family reasons for his decision.
“I have my two daughters at home. I think getting divorced a few years ago – I have those girls 50% of the time,” he said, (h/t The Athletic). “I just can’t imagine being away for eight months.”
Casey was hired by the Yankees in July after the team parted ways with former hitting coach, Dillon Lawson in hopes of sparking an offense that was mired in an extended slump while Aaron Judge was sidelined with a toe injury suffered on June 3.
The move didn’t do much to improve the Yankees’ woes even when Judge returned. In the second half of the 2023 regular season beginning on July 14, their 273 runs scored ranked 27th of 30 teams.
