Jacquie Slater joined the team at CBS 6 in July of 2022, stepping in on the weekend mornings as a part-time anchor. She moved to full-time back in October. You can catch her reporting three days a week and then on the desk on weekend mornings alongside Sam Coplin.
Slater moved to the Capital Region in March of 2018 to report at NewsChannel13. Originally from Connecticut, Slater had a few offers at the time but chose the Capital Region because, she says, it offers many of her favorite things from the many different places she’s lived and worked before — mountains, lakes, small towns and big cities, close proximity to the ocean and family.
While the journalist originally went to school for communications, she says life kicked in and took her in a different direction. She worked in restaurant management and interior design/sales while her children were young. In 2010, she decided to redirect and pursue her original goal. Slater’s first job in news was for NBC Connecticut on the assignment desk and from there she landed her first on-air job for WCTV in Tallahassee, Fl.Â
“As a reporter, I believe everyone has a story, and it is my job to listen and share,” Slater says. “I have been there for people’s brightest moments, and I have held hands with grieving parents in their darkest. Some days are definitely more difficult than others, but I am always honored and humbled when someone feels comfortable enough to allow me in.” Â
The toughest job she’s had, thought, is being a parent. When not in anchor/reporter mode, she is usually with her four kids, all of whom tower over Slater, who is 5’1″.
“While balancing work and kids can be difficult at times, I am a big believer in family meal times and we usually sit down together for dinner five or six nights a week,” Slater says. “We don’t always get things right, but we are having a lot of fun along the way.”
