Leggett hopes the game against the Orlando Predators can help flip the script for the Empire. Despite the negative press surrounding the team, he noted his players have stayed optimistic.
“I just tell them [to] ignore the noise. It’s nothing that we can control outside of the locker room, outside of our meeting room, outside of the team,” Leggett said.
The Friday matchup gives the Empire a golden opportunity to get back in the win column. Albany (1-5) and Orlando (1-5) are tied for last place in the NAL standings. Orlando’s defense has allowed more points this season than any other team in the league, giving recently installed offensive coordinator Paul Tonic a chance to reinvigorate the Empire’s offense.
“We have to make sure these guys believe that they can score,” Leggett said. “I see a lot more smiles going on and excitement about the play calling, and Coach Tonic is open to suggestions from players.”
Starting quarterback Roland Rivers III returned to action on Tuesday morning after missing practice on Monday. Rivers will look to rebound on Friday after throwing two interceptions in the Empire’s May 27 loss to the Fayetteville Mustangs.
“We got a great group of guys that stick together,” Rivers said. “Everyone is committed to the process.”
The Empire’s passing attack found success when they defeated the Predators earlier this season, with Castronova tossing six touchdowns. To emulate Castronova’s success, Rivers is focusing on the basics.
“Take it one play at a time, continue to trust each other, trust the system, trust the game plan that’s in place,” he said.
