All In: Golf reporter Lisa Cornwell’s memoir “Troublemaker” makes good trouble

Lisa Cornwell, a journalist specializing in covering golf, is a champion for the sport she loves.

Her pinned tweet from Jan. 1, 2021, foreshadowed a reckoning:  “The first day in 7 years I’m not in a contract w/Golf Channel & am free to speak up for the many women who’ve been marginalized, belittled, berated & treated like second class citizens — including me. The days of it being swept under the rug are over.”

Cornwell loved her job. But working in golf is hard, just like the game itself. She faced a tough stretch. Now things are clicking again. And she’s telling her story.

Her upcoming book is a personal triumph. “Troublemaker: A Memoir of Sexism, Retaliation, and the Fight They Didn’t See Coming” with Tucker Booth, will be released on May 23. Her “dream job” as a studio host and live course reporter working at PGA, LPGA and PGA Tour Champions tournaments is the core of her book. At Golf Channel, she also was host for the NCAA Golf Championships and participated in instructional shows for Golf Channel Academy.

“I think that that’s one thing that I’ve learned is that there is a real fear in women speaking out, there’s a real fear because retaliation is very real,” she said.

Her book is brave. Family issues are divulged as she describes the highs and lows of earning major titles in junior golf and being a premier student-athlete in high school and college. She battled depression, anxiety and an eating disorder. Cornwell is a four-time Arkansas Women’s Golf Association state champion who won her first state title at the age of 14. In 2019 she was inducted into the Arkansas State Golf Association Hall of Fame. She also was an all-state basketball star in high school, she was named the Arkansas Female Athlete of the Year during her senior year, and in 2021 was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.
