After several years of charging fair visitors a single admission price that included rides, the Altamont Fair announced Wednesday the gate admission and ride pricing is now separate.Â
“In 2023 we want to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy the fair in the way that suits them best,” fair officials wrote in a post on social media. “To accomplish this we are giving you the choice to ride or not.”
Gate admission is free for children ages 10 and younger. For those over 10 years old, gate admission is $13. On opening day (Aug. 15) gate admission is $5, those 36-inches tall and shorter are free.Â
Gate admission includes parking, entrance to the grounds, entertainment, demonstrations, music and exhibits. Ride tickets are $1.50 each. They’ll also sell bundles of 20 for $30 or 50 for $60 (a 50-ticket bundle includes a free ride voucher.) Â Wristbands on opening day are $25 and $30 for Wednesday through Sunday.
In 2022, gate admission (which included unlimited rides) was $22.Â
Social media users who have shared the announcement post nearly 300 times are mixed on how they view the news.Â
Some say the new structure will make the fair unaffordable for their family. Others — mostly those who aren’t into rides — are happy to hear about the change. The fair has limited who can comment on the post.Â
The fair, which has been around for nearly 130 years, runs from Aug. 16-20. Information is here.
