AMSTERDAM – Two women face charges in connection with the death of a 19-month-old child in the city that occurred in October, city police said Thursday. Â
Police said on the night of Oct. 9, Amsterdam officers and firefighters responded to a 911 call for a child not breathing. They were able to determine the child was breathing but was suffering unknown medical distress.
The child was turned over to firefighters who took the child by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital and soon afterward the child was taken to Albany Medical Center for further treatment.
On Oct. 12, the child died at Albany Med. It was determined the child suffered “non-accidental trauma,” ultimately leading to the death, police said.Â
On Tuesday, Kristen L. Burke, 38, of Amsterdam was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. Burke was arraigned and sent to the Montgomery County jail. Bail was set at $75,000.
On Thursday, a 34-year-old city woman was arrested and charged with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child and released pending a later arraignment.
Amsterdam detectives and State Police have been investigating the case since it occurred while being assisted by county Child Protective Services and District Attorney Lorraine Diamond.Â
Police did not offer further circumstances about how the death happened or other details about the case.Â
