ATV driver rescued by Halfmoon fire crews after falling into gravel pit

HALFMOON — The Halfmoon Fire Department conducted a specialized rescue mission Saturday night after a man allegedly crashed an ATV into a gravel pit off Button Road.

Fire crews were dispatched to the Carver Sand & Gravel pit at 11:25 p.m. Saturday to assist the Clifton Park Halfmoon EMS provide medical attention to a man who had fallen into the excavation site. The male had been out for an ATV ride before being discovered by friends who were concerned about how long he had been gone, Fire Chief Anthony Bonventre said.

A cattle gate was dismantled to allow the ambulance access to the patient. The first responders helped load him into the ambulance, and he was then transported to the hospital. Units cleared the scene at around 12:13 a.m.  

“Had he been down further, we would have had to get our UTV to him, which we did have all of them standing by right there, but we didn’t need them,” said Bonventre. “We were able to get the ambulance within 20 feet of where he was laying on the ground.”

No information was provided regarding the patient’s current condition. The extent of his injuries was unclear.
