Bethlehem sophomore Kate Browne would tell you hard work and dedication to improving your skills can lead to a lot — including a first place finish at the Section II gymnastics championship.
“It was pretty exciting,” Browne said about her top all-around finish at the championship. “I worked hard to get it. You never really know. There’s good balance with only four teams.”
Saratoga Springs has dominated the Section II gymnastics landscape winning their 21st consecutive championship this season. Not always, but usually, they are led by a first place individual. This year, however, Browne edged two Blue Streaks competitors to win the meet with a 34.125 all-around score and also earn our Times Union Section II gymnastics title of Athlete of the Year.
Browne’s highlight at the championship was the top score in uneven parallel bars (8.400) along with two third place scores in floor (8.600) and balance beam (8.875).
But as great an individual achievement as that was, Browne tends to lean more towards the enjoyment of her craft rather than stressing about winning or losing.
“I still feel a little bit of stress, and still get competitive,” Browne said. “But I’m not trying to worry about it. Going into it I just wanted to have fun.”
Browne started gymnastics in the 4th-grade and participates in club gymnastics before, during, and after the Section II season like many of her fellow athletes.
“I was pretty tired by the end of the season,” Browne added. “Going into next year, I want to improve my scores. I’m trying to focus on new skills on floor.”
No doubt, the Eagles’ opposition will have their hands full again in 2024.
