Car’s driver killed in crash with Mechanicville school bus

STILLWATER – A driver died Monday morning when, deputies said, his car crossed into the oncoming lane of Route 67 and collided with a Mechanicville school bus.

The sheriff’s office said Granberg’s car went into the oncoming lane, hit the bus, and set off a chain reaction that sent the bus crashing into a third car.

Traveling on the westbound side of Route 67, the bus collided with an eastbound car traveling behind Granberg’s car. Tara L. Beagle, 45, of Rock City Falls was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.

The bus driver, Robert Norton, 74, of Mechanicville was not injured. The four students on the bus escaped injury too.

The crash occurred near the intersection with George Thompson Road.

“Our students and bus driver are safe,” school district officials wrote in a Facebook post. The students were on the way to the F. Donald Myers Education Center’s BOCES program in Saratoga Springs.

The crash occurred just east of George Thompson Road. Route 67 was closed for several hours while investigators scanned the scene for evidence and reconstructed the circumstances of the crash.

“While we understand that any news of this nature can be alarming, we want to assure you that all students aboard the bus are safe and no major injuries [were] sustained, after medical evaluation on scene,” the district’s statement continued.
