There are some people who can walk into a room and instantly envision a magazine-worthy design concept. Then, there are people who perpetually struggle with the same old decorating challenges, like styling blank walls and barren bookshelves.
It can take me months โ maybe years โ to configure a room or hang a series of portraits. Iโm not an interior designer by trade and I may be a wee bit of a perfectionist (everything should look like what I find on Pinterest but never really does), so I turned to an expert for some inspiration and guidance on how to tackle certain design dilemmas.ย
โWhether people realize it or not they are very affected by their environment,โ said interior designer Maria Bortugno, founder and owner of B Designs, a full-service residential and commercial interior design boutique based in Loudonville.ย
Some people can’t cope with an incomplete space, she said. Others, not so much. Bortugno, who has been working as an interior designer for more than two decades, offers these tips to tackle a few common, albeit perplexing, decorating quandaries.
Decorating the wall behind a sofa
The key here is to make sure the wall behind the couch works with the rest of the room. One option is to create a picture wall,ย Bortugno said, but itโs not so easy.
โThere is an actual art to it and there are people who literally hang art for a living because itโs a complexity for most people,โ she says.ย
If youโre giving it a go on your own there are two options: You can do a varied picture wall with frames that are different colors, textures and sizes. As you envision this, youโll aim to stagger each piece, working horizontally, then vertically and so on up the wall. Youโll create an oval-like pattern, with the same weight on either side.
