GREENFIELD – Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies are investigating after a woman was shot and killed while her husband was loading his pistol in another room of their home Sunday night.
Investigators said Joseph R. Cuva Sr., 74, had just finished cleaning the 9 mm gun and was loading it when it discharged. The bullet went through a wall into another room and struck Charlene F. Cuva, also 74, in the head, killing her, authorities said.
Deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene on 157 Howe Road at about 7:40 p.m.
In their news release, authorities did not mention that any charges had been filed, and said their investigation is continuing.
Charlene Cuva was a founding member of the Gateway Church of Corinth and served as the church secretary for 20 years, according to her obituary listed with Densmore Funeral Home of Corinth.
In 1967, she took vows to become a nun. However, the day before she was scheduled to join the convent, she met Joseph Cuva. She changed her plans and married him that summer instead of becoming a nun, according to her obituary.
They were married for 56 years and have three children, all of whom still live in the area.
