WESTERLO — A volunteer firefighter saved a dog that had fallen through the ice on a pond, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple Sr. said. Then the dog bit him.
Just after 11:30 a.m., the Albany County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the dog’s plight off Camp Lane.
As the first responders arrived, a volunteer firefighter from the town of East Berne Fire Department safely tethered himself to shore, entered the water and successfully rescued the goldendoodle, Apple said in a news release. During the rescue, the firefighter sustained a cut to his face after being bitten by the dog.
The firefighter was treated at the scene and taken to Albany Medical Center for further evaluation.
