Dwayne Marshall and Reymin Guduan combined on a six-hit shutout, Cito Culver had four hits and the Tri-City ValleyCats blanked the Windy City ThunderBolts 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Ozinga Field in Crestwood, Ill.
The ValleyCats (5-6) rebounded from Monday’s loss to the ThunderBolts. They’ll play the rubber match at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday.
Marshall went seven innings while allowing three hits and striking out six with one walk. He gave way to Guduan, who pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four for his first save with the ValleyCats.
Marshall improved to 2-0 with a 2.00 earned-run average in three starts this season.
Tri-City did all the scoring in the seventh inning. Josh Broughton made it 1-0 with an RBI double to left, scoring Ciaran Devenney.
Then Rafi Vazquez hit an RBI single to right to score Broughton for a 2-0 lead. Vazquez, a pitcher, moved into the designated hitter spot when Trey Hair was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the third inning.Â
Carson McCusker added the final run with an RBI single to right to score Culver, who had reached on an infield single.
It was Tri-City’s second shutout win of the season, following a 4-0 home victory over Washington on Sunday.
