Empire State Plaza fireworks postponed due to storm

ALBANY  — The Empire State Plaza fireworks display is postponed after heavy rains rolled through the area Tuesday evening.

The plaza was already filled with people enjoying a July 4th celebration, including a show from the  “Queen of Percussion,” Sheila E.

A naturalization ceremony was held at about 5 p.m.

The state instructed people to take cover in the concourse while the storms moved through the city.

Several other large fireworks displays in the area, including shows in Saratoga Springs and Clifton Park, were still on as of 8:25 p.m. Tuesday.

The Tri-City Valley Cats said they had postponed their game in the sixth inning, but would proceed with the fireworks display once the storms passed. The team said it would finish the game after the fireworks show.

The storms caused minor outages in the Capital Region, including knocking out power to more than 440 customers in Albany County and more than 370 customers in Rensselaer County, according to National Grid’s outage map.
