Five adults and four children left homeless are being helped by local Red Cross
GLOVERSVILLE — Five adults and four children were displaced Monday by a raging early morning fire that destroyed a single-family home and took several hours to bring under control, according to the Gloversville Fire Department.
The local Red Cross is helping out the family.
By the time fire crews from Gloversville and Johnstown responded, the blaze had already engulfed the second floor and extended into the attic, and was starting to make its way into the first floor of the home at 12 Fifth Avenue, authorities said.
Despite their best efforts, the fire was too far gone and as a result, the battalion chief for safety reasons pulled everyone out of the structure.
It then took fire crews up until around 4 a.m. to bring the fire under control. The blaze was first reported at 12:44 a.m.
City firefighters were assisted by the Gloversville Police Department and the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Fire investigators from GFD and JFD are investigating the cause, which is not deemed suspicious.
