ALBANY – The Albany FireWolves just don’t have that big-name scorer who can provide a goal when the National Lacrosse League team absolutely needs to have it.
FireWolves head coach Glenn Clark acknowledged that after the FireWolves were held scoreless in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 12-10 loss to the expansion Las Vegas Desert Dogs before an attendance of 3,520 at MVP Arena.
Albany (2-6) suffered its fourth straight defeat. The FireWolves have lost all four home games.
“We’re young and inexperienced and we don’t have that marquee player,” Clark said. “They’re hard to get. We’ve lost a couple over the years. We had a guy like Joe (Resetarits) who can find net. So it’s a process and we’re in it and we’re making assessments, we’re making investments in our game play, but it is difficult.”
Resetarits was Albany’s MVP finalist who left via free agency for the Philadelphia Wings after last season.
Clark said the FireWolves also miss forward Charlie Kitchen, who is probably out for the season with a hip injury that will require surgery.
Albany forward Tanner Thomson did his part with four goals and two assists as the FireWolves built a 10-8 lead after three quarters. But neither he nor his teammates could find the back of the net in the final quarter against Las Vegas goalie Landon Kells (41 saves).
“Just got to find a way to finish games,” Thomson said. “It’s been a problem the past few games here, so I think that’s what we’re doing to work on next week and going forward, mostly, is finishing games in the fourth quarter and getting hot starts. We got better starting the game off today. We’ve just got to make sure we play a full 60. So that’s what we’re missing right now.”
