A: The Adirondack line between New York City and Montreal will resume for the first time since 2020 on April 3. The first northbound train will leave Penn Station in New York City at 8:41 a.m. and arrive at Central Station in Montreal at 8:16 p.m. The first southbound trail will leave Montreal at 11:10 a.m. on April 4 and arrive at Penn Station at 10:15 p.m.
The line also includes stops in Albany, Poughkeepsie, Saratoga Springs and Schenectady.
Amtrak had been in communication for several months with New York’s congressional delegation and its Canadian railroad partners, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific, about restoring service, which was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amtrak added 526 new hires in New York in 2022 in anticipation of reinstating the Adirondack line, offering a $25,000 sign-on bonus for mechanical roles to help attract talent, according to public relations manager Jason Abrams. New and current employees needed to be qualified (or requalified) under Federal Railroad Administration requirements, a process that can take up to two years depending on the position, Abrams said.
“The Adirondack line’s years-long closure has been economically harmful to many of the communities along its route,” said U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in a statement announcing the line’s return. “I urged Amtrak to reopen the line for months and I’m proud to be announcing that it will be resuming service ahead of the busy summer tourist season”
