GLENS FALLS — Six weeks ago, any thoughts of Green Tech repeating as Section II Class AA boys’ basketball champions appeared remote. Saturday, the Eagles showed just how far they have come since then and delivered their finest performance of the season when it mattered most.
In a rematch of the 2022 title game won by Green Tech over Christian Brothers Academy, the Eagles used a monster second-quarter showing at both ends of the court and cruised to an easy 72-36 victory over the Brothers at Cool Insuring Arena.
Saturday’s contest was vastly different from the game the two teams played Jan. 3 when CBA edged Green Tech 47-43 in double overtime. This time around, Green Tech (17-7) led 41-19 at halftime. The win over the Brothers (15-7) extended the Eagles’ winning streak to 10 games and will look to make another run at reaching the state final as they will next meet the winner of Sunday’s Section III final between West Genesee and Liverpool March 11 at the SRC Arena.
“This feels so great. I believe in my team. I knew if we stuck together after the start we had this season, we could pull this off,” said Green Tech sophomore point guard Haisi Mayben, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after he delivered 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists in Saturday’s win.
CBA coach Dave Doemel lamented after his squad beat Saratoga Springs in the semifinals that if his team faced Green Tech in the final, he was worried about their size. The Eagles did not go through a growth spurt over the past two months. Doemel’s concerns were how much more involved Green Tech’s post players have become. Saturday, Doemel’s fears became reality.
