More than 3,000 guns bought back statewide
WATERVLIET — The state attorney general’s office said it took in 357 firearms during its community gun buyback event on Saturday in Watervliet, Cohoes, Colonie, Green Island and Menands police departments.
Attorney General Letitia James, on a statement, said the event, the largest gun buyback hosted by her office in the Capital Region, was part of an effort to hold nine gun buyback events on the same day in communities throughout the state.
“Gun violence has caused so many avoidable tragedies and robbed us of so many innocent New Yorkers,” James said. “Through our partnership with local law enforcement and public officials, we were able to organize this historic, single-day gun buyback event in nine locations throughout New York state. Every gun that we removed … is a potential tragedy averted and another step in protecting communities throughout New York state.”
In addition to the guns bought back in Albany County, the attorney general’s office secured more than 3,000 guns across the state. To date, the office has removed more than 7,000 guns from communities in New York since 2019.
