TROY — A Joseph L. Bruno Stadium crowd that barely got to know Tri-City ValleyCats catcher Jakob Goldfarb last season was reintroduced to him in Friday’s season opener with impressive results.
Goldfarb, who played just one game for Tri-City last season, drove in three runs in an 11-4 victory over the Trois-Rivieres Aigles before an opening-night crowd of 3,045.
“It’s funny,” Goldfarb said. “Time’s moving slow and fast at the same time. It feels like forever since I’ve been here, but at the same time, it feels like it was just yesterday.”
He was back in the lineup on Saturday, this time as the designated hitter. In his first at-bat, he doubled into the corner in right and later scored. The ValleyCats prevailed 6-1 over the Aigles in front of a crowd of 1,836 to improve to 2-0.
Goldfarb made one appearance (in left field) for the ValleyCats last season in a June 14 game against the New Jersey Jackals at Bruno Stadium. He had just been released by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly against the Jackals, then left the next day to sign with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Goldfarb, from Scottsdale, Ariz., batted .258 in 22 games for the Diamondbacks’ rookie affiliate in the Arizona Complex League. The Diamondbacks released him last August.
“I was treated well and looking to get back to affiliated ball, maybe a few more games than last year, but we’ll see,” Goldfarb said. “It’s tough to get an opportunity coming out of independent ball and really finding your way there, so I’m just looking for an organization that needs a guy to come in there and play and hopefully I get that right opportunity.”
Until that day comes, the ValleyCats were happy to exercise the club option in Goldfarb’s contract.
