Romance writer Deborah Sabin, who goes by the pen name Morgan Malone, is a believer that we all have a soulmate. โThereโs a word, โbashert,โ which means โsoulmateโ in Yiddish, and itโs the belief that God created all souls, and they all have a match. Our job is to find that match, which I did with my husband. We had a great love, a lovely relationship, and a strong marriage, but sadly he died when he was 35 years old. I didnโt get the long-lasting happy ever after, but what I did have was wonderful.โ
Her husband, Mitch, died in 1988 in a freak accident while doing a cannonball into a pool when he snapped his spinal cord. He spent 32 days paralyzed in the hospital. โI stayed by his side right up to when he passed. I wrote him a letter every day telling him about who visited and how the Yankees were doing. I believed he would recover and one day weโd read these letters together.โ
Those were difficult days when Sabin, who lives in Saratoga County, was a young single mom and a widow with a 3 year old, a 6 year old and a full-time job for the state of New York as an administrative law judge. โI went home every night, prepared dinner, took care of the kids, and when I turned in to bed at night I needed to read and clear my mind. I didnโt reach for a book about World War II. I reached for something with a conflict that could be solved. I reached for a romance book, and that helped me get through those tough days.โ
It was her mother, years earlier, who hooked Sabin on to reading romance literature. โI read it all through high school, college and Iโm still reading it today. Itโs the most popular genre, and itโs what supports most of the major publishing companies.โ
