Local writer Deborah Sabin revisits romance genre as Morgan Malone

Romance writer Deborah Sabin, who goes by the pen name Morgan Malone, is a believer that we all have a soulmate. โ€œThereโ€™s a word, โ€˜bashert,โ€™ which means โ€˜soulmateโ€™ in Yiddish, and itโ€™s the belief that God created all souls, and they all have a match. Our job is to find that match, which I did with my husband. We had a great love, a lovely relationship, and a strong marriage, but sadly he died when he was 35 years old. I didnโ€™t get the long-lasting happy ever after, but what I did have was wonderful.โ€

Her husband, Mitch, died in 1988 in a freak accident while doing a cannonball into a pool when he snapped his spinal cord. He spent 32 days paralyzed in the hospital. โ€œI stayed by his side right up to when he passed. I wrote him a letter every day telling him about who visited and how the Yankees were doing. I believed he would recover and one day weโ€™d read these letters together.โ€

Those were difficult days when Sabin, who lives in Saratoga County, was a young single mom and a widow with a 3 year old, a 6 year old and a full-time job for the state of New York as an administrative law judge. โ€œI went home every night, prepared dinner, took care of the kids, and when I turned in to bed at night I needed to read and clear my mind. I didnโ€™t reach for a book about World War II. I reached for something with a conflict that could be solved. I reached for a romance book, and that helped me get through those tough days.โ€

It was her mother, years earlier, who hooked Sabin on to reading romance literature. โ€œI read it all through high school, college and Iโ€™m still reading it today. Itโ€™s the most popular genre, and itโ€™s what supports most of the major publishing companies.โ€

When Sabin retired, she was in her fifties and decided to try and give writing a chance. โ€œI took some writing courses to learn how to stop writing like a lawyer.โ€ She decided to…
