ALBANY — An Albany man was arrested for assaulting a woman on First Street and threatening her with a loaded handgun, city police said.
Lee Childs, 46, faces criminal possession of a weapon, menacing and criminal mischief charges related to the incident.
Officers responded to reports of an assault at about 7:30 a.m., on Sunday at a house on First Street. Upon arrival, a woman told officers that Childs, a person reportedly known to her, assaulted her inside by pushing her head into a window.
She also told officers Childs pointed a loaded handgun at her. Officers said the victim suffered cuts to to her head.
Later that afternoon, officers saw Childs on First Street and took him into custody. He was arraigned in city criminal court and sent to the Albany County jail.
Childs previously was involved in a notorious assault case that led to a police officer resigning from his job.
In March 2019, Childs was one of three men who were beaten by Albany police during a melee on First Street after police were called to break up a loud house party. The call turned violent and body camera footage released by the police department showed officers kicking in a door and repeatedly striking three men, including Childs.
That incident led to charges being filed against one of the officers, who later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and resigned from his job as part of a plea deal.
Childs later filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city. The two sides settled for $100,000 and the lawsuit was dismissed in June 2021.
Childs also faced drug charges during the summer of 2019 after he was arrested for dealing drugs on First Street, police said. The disposition of that case was not immediately available on Monday.
