SCHENECTADY – Two men have been convicted of attempted murder for their role in the abduction of a man who endured being attacked by a pit bull and beaten with a pipe over two days in a violent dispute over drugs and money.
The decision last Thursday in the trial by a judge stemmed from the October 25 and 26, 2021 beating inside an Albany Street apartment.
The ruling by Schenectady County Court Judge Matthew Sypniewski will likely result in lengthy prison sentences for Danny Harrell and Dwayne Henderson when they and a third co-defendant, Dieago Harrell, 18, are sentenced for the crime in July.
Prosecutors say Danny Harrell posted a roughly 30 second snippet of the assault on his Snapchat account — which was then sent to Schenectady police from a police department in Long Island.
Dieago Harrell, who is Danny Harrell’s younger brother, was cleared of the top count of attempted murder and one of the kidnapping offenses, but found guilty of two other kidnapping charges under different theories, as well as criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm.
In addition to the attempted murder and two kidnapping counts, Danny Harrell, 19, and Dwayne Henderson, 25, were also convicted of three counts of assault.
Henderson was also convicted of criminal possession of a controlled substance for having more than a half ounce of cocaine.
The Harrell brothers are from downstate. Henderson, a Schenectady resident, knew the victim and was the mastermind behind the kidnapping and assault, according to the prosecution.
The defense attorneys during summations hammered away at the victim’s credibility and asserted that the district attorney’s office failed to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
