City’s water department will issue refunds to affected customers
ALBANY — The city’s water department overcharged more than 800 customers due to a software error.
The Water and Water Supply Department said 845 customers were overcharged for water and sewer usage from August 2022 until March 2023, according to a statement from Commissioner Joe Coffey.
The department reads residents’ meters every four months but some were not read in December 2022 to check usage for the previous four months. The department’s software automatically assessed those customers a $77.44 minimum usage fee. Those missed readings then carried over to the next reading in March 2023 and customers’ bills were assessed for their water usage for the last eight months, rather than the last four months.
The department said it plans to contact all 845 customers affected by the error. Any payments that were already made will be refunded and customers who have not paid will receive corrected bills from the water department.
