New doctor at Scotia Orthodontics promises to ‘put patients first’

(Ad) A beloved orthodontics practice whose founder was a household name now has a new one. In April 2023, Hoskinson Orthodontics became Scotia Orthodontics following Dr. Richard Hoskinson’s planned retirement. 

Dr. Larisa Takhalova, the new doctor, began working with Hoskinson earlier this year to ensure a smooth transition with the practice’s existing patients. She said they have welcomed the change. 

“Although Dr. H left big shoes to fill, we want patients to know that they can continue to put their trust in us,” Takhalova added. “We are striving for that same reputation that he built — to put patients first, deliver the best care, and have the best experience doing it.”

Takhalova admits that she used to hide her smile as a kid. It was her lifelong dream to work in health care, but it wasn’t until she underwent orthodontic treatment that her career path took shape. 

“That personal experience helped me decide that this was the best profession for me,” she said. “I realized I could make a big difference in someone’s life, which is a very gratifying feeling.”

Takhalova studied at Stony Brook University’s School of Dental Medicine, where she received specialty training in orthodontics. Over the course of three years she gained extensive experience in comprehensive orthodontics, interceptive orthodontics, orthognathic surgery, ceramic braces, Invisalign, and cleft lip/palate dentofacial deformities. 

Some of these modalities are now part of the treatment menu at Scotia. The practice offers a wide range of options including, but not limited to, Invisalign and aesthetic braces. Takhalova has extensive knowledge and experience in multidisciplinary cases due to her prior work as a general dentist.
