CLIFTON PARK — Two late goals in the first quarter from Mason Carroll gave the Shenendehowa junior midfielder a natural hat trick and the Plainsmen the lead Tuesday evening through one quarter against Niskayuna. That strong start was squelched in a flash by the Silver Warriors during the second quarter.
Niskayuna showed why it is one of the premier programs in the state with a dominating showing in the second quarter and went on to post an impressive 16-7 victory over the Plainsmen at Steuerwald Stadium.
The Silver Warriors (3-0 overall, 2-0 Suburban Council, ranked No. 18 in the country and No. 9 in the Northeast by USA Lacrosse), took command by reeling off six straight goals over the span of 3:37 during the second quarter that turned a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 advantage with 2:58 remaining in the first half.
Niskayuna’s coaching staff came up with a tactical change following the opening 12 minutes and the Silver Warriors responded with 11 goals in the middle two quarters.
“Coming into every game, there is a different scheme with the defense (we face). They had a great defender and were pressing up on our middies a lot,” said Niskayuna senior attack Greyson Vorgang, who finished with three goals and four assists. “Our coaching staff did a great job of going into our stack look with a high middie. That worked out well for us.”
“The first quarter for us was a struggle in a lot of ways,” Niskayuna coach Mike Vorgang said. “I guess we made some adjustments and ran some things we haven’t run in a while. The kids executed and we shot the ball better. … They weren’t sliding to certain guys, so we went to a stacked look where we had three middies up top and forced them (to make a choice). We could determine where the slide was coming from.”
