COLONIE —Sierra, an outdoor equipment and apparel store owned by the parent company of T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s, is setting up shop at the Colonie Center where an REI was initially planned.
Beloved by campers and other recreationists, the retailer popular for its affordable prices will take over a 19,100-square-foot space at the south end of the shopping center in the former Sears’ space, according to a site plan published online by Seritage Growth Properties, the owner of the space.
It will border Whole Foods and Floor and Decor, a hard-surface flooring retailer opening in the spacious storefront formerly occupied by Sears. An opening date has not been announced for either store. Colonie Center forwarded requests for an inquiry to Seritage, who did not immediately respond on Wednesday.
REI signaled its interest in developing its first Capital Region location at the Colonie Center in 2019 when the brand applied for a commercial-zoning verification. The application was approved shortly after. It’s unclear why — or when — plans to build the store fell through.
Seritage is continuing to seek tenants for the upper level of the mall, where 94,000 square feet of space remains available. Sean Maguire, Colonie director of planning and economic development, said he was unaware of any future plans for the second floor.
Floor and Decor and Sierra, known for years as Sierra Trading Post, filed a memorandum of leasing in Albany County in May seeking to bar future tenants in the space including any store exceeding 15,000 square feet that sells “outdoor and non-team sports apparel and related accessories” and “sporting goods.” The list of unwanted businesses also includes a theater, health spa, night club, bowling alley, funeral home, church or any business selling pornographic materials.
