ALBANY – A Schenectady teen was sentenced to 3½ years in state prison in connection with the April 10, 2022 gunfire at Crossgates Mall that resulted in injuries to a victim, the Albany County district attorney’s office said.
Devon Beckles, 17, was also sentenced to 2½ years of post-release supervision by Judge Andra Ackerman Friday.
Last April, Beckles pleaded guilty to attempted assault, satisfying a three-count indictment that alleged he used a firearm, prosecutors said. A 17-year-old girl was struck in the hand near the entrance to Best Buy, according to police reports at the time.
7th Schenectady overdose death suspected
SCHENECTADY – Police say they suspect a death Friday is the seventh fatal overdose in six days in the city.
Police and firefighters responded to the undisclosed scene of the incident and though it needs to be confirmed through toxicology, the initial investigation indicates that an overdose is likely.
The department’s Special Investigations Unit is actively investigating the incidents and harm reduction-focused outreach personnel from differing agencies were deployed Friday throughout the city.
The epidemic has claimed several other Capital Region lives this year. In May Rensselaer County reported possibly five fatalities, as well as 12 non-fatal overdoses, that involved cocaine and fentanyl in one weekend.
Teen robbery suspect also arrested in May
ALBANY – A 17-year-old Albany resident arrested in May for an alleged robbery in the city was arrested again Wednesday for forcibly stealing a car from a woman on South Pearl Street, Albany police said Friday.
