SCHODACK LANDING — A 46-year-old killed in a fire last Thursday has been identified by State Police.
Brian D. Richard, a resident of 546 River Road, was killed in the fire that destroyed the multi-family building, Trooper Stephanie O’Neil confirmed in an email Tuesday. An investigation is ongoing, but the cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious, she said
Neighbors could hear someone calling for help when the building first caught fire around 3Â p.m. Thursday, May 18. In a matter of minutes, the Victorian-style home was fully ablaze, hot enough to melt the siding off the building across the street.
A Facebook post from the Stuyvesant Fire Company said it was one of 20 departments in Rensselaer and Columbia counties aiding the Schodack Landing Fire District. Crews left the scene around midnight.
The fire also displaced other residents and killed multiple animals. Alyssa Weingartner, 26, lost her dog while other neighbors also lost pets, she said.
“We lost everything,” she told the Times Union while revisiting the site the next morning. “We just kind of have to start from scratch all over again.”
