Police: Man attacked with wooden bowl while he slept

NORTH GREENBUSH — Police have arrested a 59-year-old man on assault charges Friday after they say he beat a man who was staying with him with a wooden bowl while he was sleeping.

North Greenbush police say they responded to reports of a man covered in blood walking along North Greenbush Road at 5:44 a.m. on Wednesday. The man told police he had been beaten on the head several times while he was asleep at the home of a man he’d met the previous evening.

He was taken by ambulance to Albany Medical Center Hospital where he was treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

On July 7, police say their investigation led them to the home of a Level 3 sex offender who lives on Midland Road. It was there, police said, they found a wooden bowl that was most likely the weapon used in the attack. A search of the home turned up a “large amount” of additional evidence, police said.

Acting on a tip, police say they searched the wooded area behind the man’s house for several hours. Police had also been told that the man threatened to harm himself while in the woods.

The man was ultimately found on New Scotland Avenue in Albany and arrested by the Albany police.

He was arraigned at North Greenbush Town Court and remanded to the Rensselaer County jail due to prior felony charges.

The man had previously been convicted of attempted kidnapping of a 12-year-old boy in 2010, according to the state Department of Criminal Justice Services sex offender registry website.
