ROTTERDAM — Authorities appear to be making progress in the joint police probe into the killing last week of a husband and wife, according to a town police spokesman, who also stressed that there is no threat to the public.
“The general public has nothing to be fearful of,” said Rotterdam Police Lt. Patrick Farry on Monday. “The investigation is ongoing and moving forward.”
As of Monday afternoon, police had not released the cause of death and have largely remained tight-lipped about the circumstances around the slaying of Cathy Guillaume, 65, and 73-year-old Robert Guillaume.
The couple were discovered dead Friday inside a home on Fern Avenue.
The Times Union has previously reported that a family member is the focus of the investigation, something police have neither confirmed or denied.
Farry declined to comment Monday when asked about potential suspects or if police had detained anyone for questioning in connection to the killings.
Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney did not return a call to his cellphone Monday seeking comment on the case.
This is the second time within the past month that Fern Avenue has seen violence.
Police responded during the late night hours of June 16 to a report of a shooting at a home next door to where the Guillaumes were killed.
Police found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower leg.
He was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
Asked about a possible connection, Farry said Monday that they appear to be two separate incidents and that the investigation into the shooting is still pending.
Rotterdam Police are being aided in their investigation by the State Police, including the agency’s Police Forensic unit.
