ALBANY – It dates to the 1970s and probably peaked in the 1980s, but the Rubik’s Cube still has a corps of devoted adherents around the world – and some are coming to town this weekend.

Starting Saturday, the World Cube Association’s 2023 CubingUSA Mid-Atlantic Championship will be at the Capital Center, 55 Eagle Street.

Often known as speedcubers, these puzzle solvers compete to see who can quickly solve any number of variations on the Rubik’s Cube, the multi-colored puzzle toy in which players have to match colored squares.

In addition to the classic Rubik’s Cube, competitors will deal with other puzzles of various shapes and sizes: All vying for the title of Mid-Atlantic Champion.

Competitions include blindfolded cubing and contests to see who can match cubes in the fewest moves.

The event also will offer a chance to learn more about the World Cube Association and its worldwide mission to promote the art and sport of speedcubing. Representatives from the WCA will be available to discuss the organization’s efforts in advancing the sport and fostering a global community of cubers.

Cubing begins Saturday morning at 8:20 a.m. with sessions running morning and afternoon throughout Monday.
