Moira Collins is a senior pitcher for the Tamarac softball team.
A four-year varsity competitor, Collins drove in five runs in a 16-3 win against Cambridge last week.
The Bengals (16-3), seeded No. 2 in the Class B sectionals, will host the winner of the opening-round game between Cohoes and Coxsackie-Athens on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Q: I have to imagine it is probably hard to believe your varsity career is almost over with, so how much are looking forward to sectionals?
A: I am really looking forward to it, but it is definitely going to be bittersweet with it coming to an end.
Q: The team landed the No. 2 seed. I know the regular season did not end the way you hoped with a loss to Greenwich in the Wasaren League Tournament final. What are your thoughts on sectionals?
A: Well, the losing definitely helped us because you have to learn when you lose. We have that going into sectionals. I am excited. I think we can do pretty well.
Q:Â How old were you when you began playing softball.
A: I was 5.
Q: Were you always a pitcher, or did that come later?
A: I always wanted to because I remember being really bored playing the outfield when I started.
Q: What is it about pitching that provides so much enjoyment?
A: I like being in control of the game and I have just learned to love it as I have grown up.
Q: The team has been on a nice build during your career to get to this point. There is No. 1 seed Ichabod Crane, the defending state champions, to deal with potentially. What would it mean if your team won the sectional title this year?
A: That would be insane. I think it would mean the world to all of us to come back from some tough losses and end up winning.
