Tanner Williams is a junior midfielder for the Niskayuna boys’ lacrosse team.
A three-year varsity standout, Williams has made an oral commitment to compete at Division IÂ Stony Brook. The Silver Warriors return to action Monday at Union College in the Section II Class B semifinals against Columbia.Â
Q: People that follow Section II lacrosse know about Niskayuna’s winning tradition. This is prime time for the program. How much are you looking to concluding the season?
A: I am excited to get it rolling. I want to win bad. My freshman year, we lost to Shaker (in the Class A semifinals), which never really happens so we weren’t accustomed to that. My sophomore, we bounced to win the Class B title and got bounced out in the first round of regionals. We are kind of hungry for revenge.
Q: The team rolled through Section II competition, but dropped a couple of games to teams outside the area. What did you learn from those games?
A: The game is a whole lot faster out of league play. Everyone is much more skilled, which might sound bad. The special positions like goalie and face-off, you see a lot more crazy athletes playing those positions.
Q: You enjoyed two quality seasons prior to playing in 2023. What did you attempt to improve upon this season?
A: I hit the wall and took a lot of shots during the offseason. Just because you don’t practice (with the high school team) doesn’t mean you don’t practice. I hit the weight room a lot because I’m not that big.
Q: If you had to give yourself a personal assessment entering the playoffs, how well do you feel you have played?
A: That is a good question. I think I could definitely do more. I did OK. I am not good with OK. I’d rather do better.
Q; Being better in the playoffs is the right time to raise your level of play, right?
