The Suburban Council coaches did not select Holohan among the league’s top 15 players when she was a sophomore. This season, Holohan earned Suburban Council Player of the Year honors.
The junior expanded her offensive arsenal, maintained her stellar defense and became the leader for the Warriors as the team extended its Section II Class A title streak to nine consecutive championships with Holohan garnering tourney Most Valuable Player honors. The 6-foot-1 forward averaged 18.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 6.2 blocks, 3.7 steals and 3.0 assists per game in helping Averill Park finish 22-3 and reach the state semifinals.
“Defense wins game. Offense will come from the defense. We kind of thrive off of that,” Holohan said. “I will forever say that defense wins games and defense gives energy.”
“She really shows up on both sides of the basketball,” Organ said. “I was pleased to see her expand on her perimeter game and show more confidence to step out and find different ways to attack beyond just in the post. Probably the game against Simsbury (Conn.), on Shen’s court, is where she started to show that confidence moving inside and outside and knocking down perimeter shots. That is a positive sign of things to come next year.
“Defensively, she does a great job of protecting the rim by blocking shots and altering shots. I think teams have to game plan a bit for that. She puts pressure on teams to knock down more perimeter shots. With leadership, someone had to take over in the absence of two amazing senior leaders (2022 graduates Amelia Wood and Michelina Lombardi) from last year, someone had to step up and be a leader this year. Bailee Lange was more our leader by example. She wasn’t the most vocal player, but she would speak when she needed to.
