ALBANY — The Times Union won eight honors — ranging from a deep investigation of horse racing to an arresting photograph of a haunted house worker prepped for the Halloween rush — in the 2022 Awards for Excellence competition overseen by the New York News Publishers Association.

Three Times Union opinion writers were honored: Chris Churchill for his general-interest column; Joyce Bassett for her sports columns focusing on women competitors; and Akum Norder — who in January became the paper’s senior editor for opinion — for editorial writing.
The staff of the Times Union won the distinguished features supplement competition for “Essential Restaurants,” the annual celebration of the region’s top eateries.
Greg Dayton won for distinguished page design/presentation for a selection of his work, including front pages recording the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the outcome of last year’s political contests.
From the photo department, Lori Van Buren won for distinguished news photography for capturing an extra on the Albany set of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” falling perilously close to the hooves of a spooked horse, while Jim Franco’s image of a haunted house worker in Ballston Spa was honored in the features photography category.
