The Siena men’s basketball program found a point guard north of the border.
The Saints got a verbal commitment on Wednesday night from 6-foot-5 Michael Evbagharu, who plays for Royal Crown Academic School in Toronto. Evbagharu committed while on his official visit to Siena. He is leaving for Toronto on Thursday.
“It’s a great day to be a Saint. AGTG,” tweeted Evbagharu, using the initials for “All Glory To God.”
Evbagharu also tweeted a graphic of him wearing a Siena uniform with jersey No. 22, which was also worn by former Saints point guard Jalen Pickett from 2018 to 2021.
While Siena can hope Evbagharu turns out to be as good as Pickett, a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year who transferred to Penn State and became an All-American, Evbagharu addresses an obvious need left by the departure of point guard Javian McCollum, who transferred to Oklahoma.
Evbagaharu can also play shooting guard and small forward. He was the MVP of the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association Finals and the co-MVPÂ of the Biosteel All-Canadian Basketball Games, which features the top Canadian high school basketball players who are either Canadian-born or enrolled in a Canadian institution.
He averaged 18.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.6 steals last season.
Last year, Lakers superstar Lebron James and the Canadian rapper Drake gave Evbagharu and his mother a $100,000 gift in a video that was posted on Instagram.
Siena head coach Carmen Maciariello has one more scholarship to give for next season. He has already has commitments from six recruits. including Evbagaharu, and Siena freshmen Killian Gribben and Brendan Coyle are getting scholarships after being preferred walk-ons this past season.
