TROY — The city and the Northeastern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer to install free smoke alarms as part of the “Sound the Alarm” event on Saturday, April 29, in the city.
Troy is the location of the event in order to draw attention to improving safety by installing smoke detectors, said Abigail Adams, the regional communications director for the American Red Cross.
“New York leads the nation in fire deaths, which is why Troy is taking action and partnering with the American Red Cross to provide lifesaving alarms to families in need. I encourage families to register for this event, consider volunteering to help with alarm installations, and to practice a fire escape plan that gets you and your family outside of your home in less than two minutes,” Mayor Patrick Madden said in a statement.
The smoke alarms distributed by the American Red Cross will last for a decade, Adams said.
“A working smoke alarm can be the difference between survival and tragedy when a home fire strikes. That’s why the Red Cross is teaming up with partners to help ensure Troy residents, especially those most vulnerable, have these lifesaving devices,” Kevin Coffey, CEO, American Red Cross Eastern New York Region, said in a statement.
Residents can register at redcross.org/STAeny or contact the Red Cross via email at [email protected] or call 518-694-5121 to arrange an installation visit between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. April 29.
The Red Cross also is seeking volunteers for the program. They can sign up at redcross.org/STAeny or call 518-694-5121. They will be trained on how to install the smoke alarms and to provide fire safety information. Volunteers will meet at the YWCA of the Greater Capital Region at 21 First St., Troy on the day of the event.
